New to Surfing

I've never surfed before. Can I take a lesson?

Of course! You can take a beginners lesson and go from there. If you want to really progress, you can get a 5-lessons pack. Even if you have never seen a surfboard before, we guarantee you will have fun and learn a new skill!

Do I need prior surfing experience?

Not at all. Our lessons are designed for all levels – from complete beginners to advanced surfers. We always group participants by level to ensure the best possible progression.

I can't swim, can I take a lesson?

If you can't swim, we suggest you stay with the beginners, since the lesson takes place in the white wash, so it's not deep waters and you don't need to know how to swim.

How long does it take to learn how to surf?

It varies from person to person. Some people are able to stand up on the board during their first lesson, while others may need a few more sessions to feel comfortable. Consistency and practice are key. We focus on building your skills progressively so that you gain confidence in the water.

Is surfing hard to learn?

Anyone can learn to surf – it’s all about the right coaching and mindset. We focus on small steps forward in every session. Progress is key.

Is surfing safe?

Safety is our top priority. All our instructors are certified, and we always adapt lessons to the ocean conditions and your level.

Is surfing safe for kids and older adults?

Absolutely! We offer lessons tailored to different age groups and skill levels. Our instructors ensure a safe and fun environment for all students, providing the right guidance and equipment to match each individual's needs, whether they're children, teens, or older adults.

What age groups do you teach?

We welcome kids, teens, and adults. Generally from around 6 years and up. Surfing is for everyone – and we love seeing both young and older surfers progress in the water.Absolutely! We offer lessons tailored to different age groups and skill levels. Our instructors ensure a safe and fun environment for all students, providing the right guidance and equipment to match each individual's needs, whether they're children, teens, or older adults.

Equipment & Logistics

What should I bring to my surf lesson?

We provide all the necessary equipment, including surfboards, wetsuits and boots. You just need to bring: 
• Swimwear
• Towel
• Sunscreen
• Water (to stay hydrated)
• An open mind and good energy 🌊

If you have a wetsuit or board you'd prefer to use, feel free to bring it along!

How long is a lesson?

A standard lesson lasts around 2 hours, including warm-up, theory, and time in the water.

What’s included in a surf lesson?

All our lessons include:
• Surfboard
• Wetsuit

Where do you surf?

We operate at different beaches around Ericeira, depending on the conditions. Each day we choose the safest and best spot for your level.

Do you offer transport to the beach?

Yes, we provide transfers from Ericeira center to São Lourenço Beach. This is included in your lesson, making your experience smooth and stress-free.

What is the best time of year to take surf lessons?

We offer lessons year-round, but the best time depends on your skill level and goals. On summer and early autumn the waves are typically smaller and more manageable. If you are an advanced surfer seeking bigger swells, winter and early spring bring larger waves.

Types of Surf Lessons / Coaching

Do you offer female surf classes?

Yes. We have female coaches and a strong female presence in our team. We also run a dedicated women’s surf club with weekly sessions, creating a supportive and inspiring space for women to progress together.

Do you offer advanced courses?

Yes. For surfers looking to level up, we offer:
• A 1-week intensive course with 5 surf sessions
• A 1-month program with 8 surf sessions plus surf skate training.

These programs are designed to accelerate your progression and deepen your understanding of surfing.

Do you offer weekly surf groups?

Yes, we offer weekly surf groups tailored for different levels and needs, including kids, women, and more advanced surfers. These groups are perfect for building consistency and long-term progression.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes. Private lessons are perfect if you want faster progression or more personalized coaching.

Do you offer surf camps or retreats?

Yes, we offer surf camps and retreats, including our popular women’s retreats. These experiences combine surfing, community, and personal growth.

Bookings

How do I book?

You can book directly through our website or contact us via email or WhatsApp. We recommend booking in advance, especially during high season.

What happens if there are no waves?

We carefully monitor surf conditions. If conditions are not safe or suitable, we will reschedule your lesson.

Progress Surf School is all about exactly what the name says – progression. Whether it’s your first time on a board or you’re looking to take your surfing to the next level, we focus on helping you improve in a safe, fun, and effective way.

So… what is “progress”?

Progress means moving forward – step by step, wave by wave. It’s not just about standing up once, but about truly developing your skills, confidence, and understanding of the ocean.Progress Surf School was created by Joana Andrade, Portugal’s first female big wave surfer and one of the few women in the world competing at that level.The school is led by Joana together with a strong female leadership team across CEO, CFO, and marketing. This foundation shapes everything we do – from coaching style to culture – creating an environment that is supportive, empowering, and focused on real development.
